With the rapid deployment of 4G equipment, where is all of the existing transmission equipment going to go? Maybe some good deals for the rural carriers not quite ready for 4G deployment. At least it would be a good upgrade from 1X to 3G in some cases...

One of the vendors listed here is a used equipment dealer. Microwave Radio, CO, Power and Data Equipment

Be interesting to get his input on this.

Some of the equipment out there is not that old, and there is good opportunities for the budget minded rural carriers to keep their eye's peeled.

Funny, I constantly pass through the rural area of my city and I'm not seeing much progress by way of cellular towers or anything remotely cellphone based. What I AM seeing is more conversion of telephone equipment being converted to fiber optics and then a removal of above ground poles and wiring. Even in the agricultural city where I live I have been able to spot 4 cell towers and that really hasn't changed from a few years ago. Our city isn't a one horse one, we have a few hundred thousand people living here and most if not all have cellphones.

I recently went on a cross town trip by car with a friend and deliberately counted the number of towers I saw from start to finish (one way of course) and counted 5 towers from just the highway. Our city isn't that small but even rurally I saw nothing remotely tower, only telephone wires and poles. I guess we'll have to wait until technology catches up with us.

I think much of the progress comes from demand. If people are out of work, they cannot afford their cellphone and will turn it off rather than pay the fees especially if they have a land line phone. The longer people go without work the harder it is to find the money to build the towers and pay the workers behind the scenes. The economy appears to be looking up a little bit as more jobs are created and the economy recovers a bit. Hopefully in the more rural areas towers will start dotting the planet and cellular service will improve.
