Verizon’s 4G LTE Hits Half of the US

Amrisa Bhagwandin on August 18, 2011

Back in March, Verizon said that they were aiming to provide 147 cities with 4G LTE coverage. Today, they have reached a pinnacle in rollout plans by providing for more than half of the American population. Verizon’s 4G LTE network now covers 160 million people in 117 cities. The expansion is keeping the mobile carrier well ahead of other companies and shows no sign of slowing down.

Verizon is launching their 4G LTE network in 15 new cities today and expanding in 10 other. The switch is being turned on in Memphis, Tennessee; Fort Collins, Colorado; Provo, Utah; Omaha, Nebraska, and 11 others. Verizon is expanding coverage in major cities such as Boston, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Tampa, and New York City.

The company says that each expansion is significant since they intend to bring their 4G LTE network to more than 185 million Americans by the end of 2011. Verizon is also partnering with rural carriers to ensure coverage in rural areas and ergo, every single area in the US. By the end of 2013, they also expect 4G to cover the existing Verizon Wireless 3G coverage area. By ensuring optimum service in Tri-Cities, Verizon is displaying further proof of their commitment to bringing the lightning fast network to life.

They are enthusiastic about the improved efficiency and quality of speed consumers will experience when it comes to downloads, mobile video-conferencing, video streaming, and file transferring. No doubt about it, Verizon customers are anticipating this as well.

I think 4G is a smart communication system which provides high definition Video calling.

I have had Verizon and Cricket, both androids both supposedly 4G, then I got rid of one and signed up as a back up phone with T*Mobile but it's only 3G and I have to tell you that I see zero difference between the phones as far as download speed, internet connections and, in fact, the T*Mobile throw away is actually better than the $300 android from Cricket when it comes to some of the features. Granted, the throw away isn't touch screen but, well I take the T*Mobile with me more than the android on errands.

Funny I came across this thread. I was offered a package that toted the mentioned 4G speed for the first 100gb of download data and I found it slower than the on board 3G. It was if it hung or froze my browser and even now when freshly booted (phone), I see little benefit and a lot of waiting for this so called 4G speed. It's a laugh, so what the hell am I paying for?

Like the other posters, I'm not finding too much to like about the so called 4G craze. I am not at all certain what if anything makes 4G so special unless it's just a ploy to charge more for the same 3G offers for less. I am not experiencing the hangs and issues the poster above is having, mine just doesn't impress me all that much enough to justify the extra expense. Not looking for it to clean my house, but, give me something to justify the price.
